Racing for The University of Melbourne all the frequently asked questions you should've thought to ask... Q: Must I have done interschools to race for MUSKI?A: No! Some of our members have done interschools in the past but its certainly not a prerequisite. Most of us didn't. If you have experienced interschools you'll find the university races a lot more relaxed and a lot more fun.Q: Do I need to have skied before?A: Most certainly not! Our aim is to get as many people skiing as possible every year. Our trips are aimed at all levels of skill, including “I’ve never seen snow before, but gee,-willickers it’d be swell to give skiing a go!”Q: I need to brush up on my skills. Does MUSKI provide any race training?A: The best training is to have lessons during the social trips. We can organise a more race-focused lesson for you. In addition we will be providing some park lessons for those interested in doing slope -style. Its not so much about learning to do your first double cork 12 but rather to help you get used to boxes and jumps in a safe, professional environment.Q: Is MUSKI good?A: YesQ: Really?A: Yes. Check out our 2010 trophies in the sports centre; they’re so shiny.Q: Is the focus purely on racing?A: Not at all. Even at the competitive state event, there’s a balance between racing and partying with the other universities. At the national event there are still parties although there is a greater focus on competitive racing. Indeed, at the national event all competitors are beathalised before competing. For better or worse, this is not so at the state event.Q: I'm still scared that I won't be any good. How do I know if I can race?A: If you can make it down Bourke St, you can race! Some people even snowplow around the gates. Its more about the experience and getting involved. If you need a little confidence boost either have a lesson or go for a ski with one of our committee members. They'll tell you how you're likely to go at VIC IVs, and you’d have to be really trying hard to fail, for them not to give you a big thumbs up.Q: Is racing dangerous?A: No, not at all. The only injuries suffered by MUSKI racers in 2010 were a broken arm, a blown ACL, lacerations to the face, a broken ankle, numerous concussions and several sprained wrists. Racing for MUSKI is very safe; you should’ve seen the other guys.
